Located at 740m in the heart of the Pays Toy area of the Hautes-Pyrénées, the welcoming village of Luz Saint Sauveur has a friendly, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The charming village with its rich history of the Knights Templar its friendly locals is a pleasure to wander around. With a good selection of bars, restaurants and general amenities in the village there is always something to do, always a new restaurant to try, always a new experience waiting along one of the intimate alleyways and tiny streets.

Delightfully situated in a deep triangular valley where the light floods in through the high mountains on either side. Spanish smugglers arriving from Aragon via the Brêche De Roland mountain pass were amazed to find the bright and luminous valley at the end of a narrow and dark gorge (they compared it to the opening of a cave for those sat inside it) As the smugglers hurried toward the luminous valley they found a vibrant sun-lit town. They decided to name the town “Luz” which is Spanish for “Light”. And this is the way in which Victor Hugo described the village in 1843, during his stay. Located at the confluence of the Gavarnie and Bastan rivers (known locally as “Gaves”) which descend from the village of Barèges higher up the valley.
Luz enjoys a rich and preserved heritage. The Knights Templar passed through the town and there is a 12th century church at its centre that bears their name. The prestigious spa as well as “Le Pont Napoleon” (Napoleon’s Bridge) are also indicators of the villages historic past.

Wandering through the narrow cobbled streets of the town, you cannot help but fall upon well preserved historical monuments mixed in amongst the traditional Pyrenean architecture of the local houses; the fortified church of the Knights Templer, Napoleon’s Bridge Gradet-Poque House, the local thermal spa , the Solferino chapel and Saint Marie’s Castle but to name a few.

During the summer there are plenty of activities and events organised by the Tourist Office. Events include the celebration of the French national day, the Mountain Festival and the Festival of jazz – all which normally take place in July.
Nearby you will also find the Festival of Gavarnie and sometimes certain stages of the Tour de France or the etape du Tour (non pro version of the race) as well as the Haute Route will take place in August time.

The tourist Office also organises animation throughout the season including sporting tournaments, concerts, night markets and village festivals throughout the season. Please ask at the Tourist Office for more details.

The friendly and helpful Luz Saint Sauveur Tourist Office is open in July and August, from Monday to Saturday 09:00 – 19:00 and on Sunday 9:00-12:00 and 16:00-19:00. Outside these months, the office is open from Monday to Saturday 09:00-12:00 and 14:00-18:30, on Sunday only 09:00-12:00. Their comprehensive website is full of useful information, tips and suggestions.
