66700, Argelès-sur-Mer. Tel: +33(0)468 816008
The Romanesque church of Saint-Laurent-du-Mont is undoubtedly one of the finest architectural treasures in the mountains surrounding Argelès. Built in the twelfth century, Saint Laurent served as a parish church for the many farmhouse that were nestled in the hills. In 1939, the building served as a shelter for Spanish refugees fleeing the war and over the course of time the chapel has also served as a barn! Today the chapel welcomes hikers in the area and is managed by the Argelès Chapels Association.

Chateau De Taxo D'avall et Chapelle Vicomtale
66700, Argelès-sur-Mer. Web: www.taxodavall.info/
This site is of Roman origin, but it is mentioned for the first time in 897 under the name "Tacione." In medieval times, the castle was the birthplace of the Taxo family who held the title of Viscount of Roussillon. Significant parts of the castle remain in place today. There are still parts of the embattled wall dating from the eleventh century and two semicircular corner towers. There is also a cylindrical tower dating back to the 15th century which was probably used as a signal tower likes the ones of La Massana and Madeloc. In the center of the fortified enclosure stands a stunning chapel dedicated to St. Martin and St. Croix.

Les Dolmens
66700, Argelès-sur-Mer
The Dolmens are the oldest monuments of the region. These are ossuaries - mass graves that can be dated from the first age of metals. Archeologists have discovered twelve such burial areas in the Albères Mountains and two sites in Argelès. The Dolmens are classed as historical monuments (1958), and are precious insights of a little-known past.

Saint Ferreol de la Pave
66700, Argelès-sur-Mer. Tel: +33(0)468 816008
The hermitage of Saint Ferreol de la Pave consists of two easily identifiable parts built at different times. The path up to the Pave is a section of the old road which allowed the crossing of the Albères up the valley of La Massana. This route was adopted by Philip the Bold in 1285 during the crusade against Pere el Gran Aragon. The chapel became the property of Argeles in 1858, the same year it was dedicated to St. Ferreol. It has been classified as a historical monument since 1991.

La Tour de la Massane
66700, Argelès-sur-Mer
The current tower was built in the late 13th at the behest of Jacques II de Mallorca. The first mention of the Tower of Massane dates back to 1293, where in Catalan it was referred to as the "Torre de Pérabona" - literally translated as the Tower of Good Stone. The tower has long been used as a signal tower and watch tower due to its strategic positioning. Today, 700 years after its construction, the Tower of Massane still watches over the city and is a symbol of Argelès and a witness of its past. Located approximately 800 meters above the town, it offers a fabulous view over the Roussillon plain and the Mediterranean coast.

Notre Dame de Vie et Saint Jerome
Route de Notre Dame de Vie, 66700, Argelès-sur-Mer.
The church of Notre Dame de Vie and Saint Jerome was designated as a historical monument in 1944.The main building comprises a ground floor sanctuary and a floor housing the hermit. The date of construction of the building is unknown.

Eglise Notre Dame dels Prats
Rue de la République, 66700, Argelès-sur-Mer. Tel: +33(0)468 811585
The parish church dedicated to Our Lady dels Prats dates back to the 14th century and used to be situated within the city walls, to the southwest corner of the enclosure. Although the church origins can be traced back to 920, it was almost entirely rebuilt in the fourteenth century in a rare Gothic style in the department. Argeles is the Roussillon example of this architecture. The vault and the roof were renovated in the late 18th century. The Church comprises a total of 103 works of art for thirty saints. The Notre-Dame-dels Prats church is flanked by a beautiful Romanesque bell tower, which rises to 34 meters in height and is designated as a historical monument. The bell tower has been used over time as both a signal and lookout due to the fact that is is one of the highest towers in the Roussillon area.

The Walls
66700, Argelès-sur-Mer
The walls are mentioned in writings dating back to the late 13th century and the time of the Kings of Majorca. Throughout its history, Argelès had to face numerous attacks: besieged by the king of Aragon in 1344, occupation of Roussillon by Louis XI, liberation of the city by John II of Aragon. The walls used to be surrounded by a moat and consisted of 3 main gates. Remains of the walls can still be seen at Rue du 14 Juillet, Avenue de la Libération, Route Nationale, Rue Banqui and Rue des Remparts.

Casa De l'Albera Maison du Patrimoine
4 Place des Castellans, 66700, Argelès-sur-Mer. Tel: 33(0)468 959673.

The museum also offers guided tours of the town and beach.

Le Chateau de Pujol
66700, Argelès-sur-Mer
Experts believe that the castle was built at the end of the 11th century. The castle has played an important strategic role in the area and was fought over by the Count of Roussillon and the Viscount Taxo. In 1145, the two sides entered into armed conflict, the Count of Roussillon prevailed and recovered his property which was considered a matter of honour. Not far from the tower, there is a beautiful fountain which is thought to have supplied water to the area around the castle and to the castle itself.

Collioure
Place du 18 Juin, BP 2, 66190, Collioure. Tel: +33(0)468 821547. Email: contact@collioure.com . Web: www.collioure.com/
Just 26km from the Spanish border, Collioure is an idyllic place on the rocky coastline, nestling in an unspoilt, protected environment. This small Catalan port has always been a coveted location because of its access to the Mediterranean Sea and its origins can be traces as far back as 673, indicating that the settlement here was of strategic and commercial importance in the time of the Visigoths. Large numbers of Roman and Greek seafarers made Collioure their destination and left behind a rich archaeological heritage that can be explored today. The towns quaint cobbled streets, with their buildings daubed in rich pastel colours with terracotta roofs, are a joy to wander and are lined with tempting restaurants serving local specialities to impress any palette. Why not indulge yourself with a dish of 'zarzuelas' (traditional Catalan fish stew) or perhaps some 'cargolada' (grilled snails) or Catalan lamb, washed down with a large glass of the very aromatic local Grenache? The medieval port is a stunning location during both day and night and the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by as you look out across the harbour at the Royal Castle and the stunning Notre Dame Des Anges church.

Approximately half of the mountains are covered in woodland. The foothills are populated by olive, evergreen oak and cork oak trees along with scrub and gorse. At higher altitudes you will find ash, birch, hazel and chestnut trees - some of the beech groves are listed as a nature reserve. Higher still you will find the mountain pastures where the small, semi-feral, ‘Massanaises’ cows, graze in the summer months. The mountains are an integral part of the tourist environment of the resort and provide a wide choice of activities from walking and hiking to mountain biking and horse riding. The shade of the trees offers coolness and relaxation, just a few kilometres from the beach, with stunning views down to the town and out across the Mediterranean.

Reserve Naturelle Nationale du Mas Larrieu
Allée F. Buisson, BP 99, 66700, Argelès-sur-Mer. Tel: +33(0)468 953458
This natural reserve was established in 1984 and covers 145 hectares, north of the town of Argelès-sur-Mer at the mouth of the Tech River. The reserve became a sentinel of the biodiversity of the Argelèsien coast due to its unique location between the fresh water of the Tech and the salt water of the Med. The site is regarded as one of the last 'wild' Roussillonnais coastal sites and has become a safe haven for many animal and plant species which can be found in a wide range of habitats from its Mediterranean dunes to its hayfields.
