Font Romeu- Pyrénées 2000 as its name implies is made up of the ski areas of Font Romeu and Bolquère - Pyrénées 2000.
The two of them seamlessly connected via the Col del Pam. Whilst Font Romeu is the lively village of the mixture, Bolquère is a small village just 4 km away.
Font Romeu is a small and lively family ski resort in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees just 19km from Perpignan. With its close proximity to Spain and Andorra, it is renowned for its sunny days and warm Catalan welcome. Its “Famille Plus Montagne” award means that it has been awarded by the French Ministry of Tourism’s seal of approval for being family freindly and supplying excellent facilities and services for families. |
Located in the heart of the Natural Regional Park of the Catalan Pyrenees, at a height of 1800m it is close to Andorra and Spain. The charming old village of Font Romeu has a warm friendly, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and a rich history. The village of Font Romeu has two smaller parishes within its outer limits – the parish of Odeillo with its huge Heliodyssée Solar Centre and the parish of De Via. In 1822 these small parishes combined and became one community and in 1980 the extremities of Font Romeu reached Odeillo. In 2009 it all finally became one urban area with agricultural land and fields in between.
It was not until the early 1900’s that Font Romeu and its parishes became a tourist destination. The first chalets and hotel were built in 1924 whilst the first ski lift appeared in 1937. The Solar centre was constructed in 1962 and the Olympic site was inaugurated in 1967, 1 km north of the village centre. This establishment became the National High Altitude Training Centre and attracts athletes the world over. British athletes such as Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe train here and the latter is an ambassador for the area.
Font Romeu is a traditional mountain resort with a buzzing resort centre lined with shops, bars, restaurants and tea rooms. The area is very proud of its great Catalan and French food as well as the selection of excellent local wines. There is wine and cured meat tasting in the heart of town and excellent restaurants with views of the Catalan Pyrenees and over to Spain that will melt your heart.
The great thing about Font Romeu is that the cable car is located in the centre of town, just beside the tourist office, so it is literally a case of enjoy your breakfast and then jump on the cable car up to the snowy areas above – whether you are downhill skiing or cross country skiing, both areas are located on the slopes. So even the cross country skiers get to enjoy the beach like atmosphere on the mountain. Here in Font Romeu it is all about fun and good times.
After a great day skiing and enjoying the sunshine and good food on the slopes, you can pop in to the Tourist Office and decide upon where the apres ski or none slope based activities will lead you. Font Romeu has every activity you could dream of for culture vultures, adrenalin junkies, nature lovers and children (see Activities tab).

It was discovered in 1958 during the mining of marble -a quarry rock blast revealed an enormous hole set on two levels and displayed an extremely rich underground landscape. For 25 years, the cave was only a speleologists' territory before the town council finally decided to make this mysterious underground world accessible to the general public. Thanks to the comfortable equipment – set on two levels – of the cave, visitors can discover a fascinating and perfectly preserved underground world at their own pace. Several chambers follow one another during this underground circuit which stretches for approximately 1km. There is an underground lake with jelly fish as well as columns and aragonite. The hundreds of fistulous stalactites hanging from the roof look like remarkable draperies or fine silver hair whilst the array colours brighten up this spectacular circuit. Opening dates and times: The cave is open all year round as the temperature remains constant and cool. Closed 5,24,25,31 December and New Year’s Day Price of guided visit: Adult/9.90€; Child/6.20€. Visits operate at 10:30 / 11:30/ 14:30 / 15:30 / 16:30 from December to March. This quaint Pyrenean village is located just 20 minutes from Font Romeu. Situated above the pretty village of Font Romeu lies the sunny ski resort of Font Romeu Pyrénées 2000. It is a typical mountain resort offering high altitude skiing and excellent snow making facilities. It has 530 strategically placed snow canons to ensure great snow coverage at all times a Snow/Live park. The resort extends from 1,950m metres to 2,250 metres with 275 km of lift served runs and 111 km of cross country trails.
The ski resort of Font Romeu Pyrénées 2000 is situated in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. The ski resort, which begins at a height of 1,950 meters, opened in 1937.
Font Romeu Pyrénées 2000 as its name implies is made up of the ski areas of Font Romeu and Bolquère - Pyrénées 2000. The two of them seamlessly connected via the Col del Pam. Whilst Font Romeu is the lively village of the mixture, Bolquère is a small village just 4 km away.
The ski area is very panoramic and has a lot of wooded area. Customer service in the ski area is a priority for Font Romeu which is why the area is equipped with modern and high tech ski lifts and systems to ensure less waiting time and more skiing. The pistes are always well maintained and signposted.
The ski area is split into three distinct areas – La Gallinera, La Calme and Pyrénées 2000. The base areas of Pyrénées 2000 is located 4km away on the main road out of town that leads towards Perpignan whilst the and le Plateau des Airelles, Plateau de la Calme and the Col del Pam areas can be accessed via the mountain road which is accessed from the main road between Font Romeu Bolquère - Pyrénées 2000. On the mountain, a shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes between le Plateau des Airelles and Plateau de la Calme and the journey takes ca. 10 mins.
Font Romeu has plenty to offer beginners and intermediates making it a great for families or those who appreciate a relaxed slope side experience in sunny and almost beach like setting with a laid back atmosphere. In addition to its relaxed, friendly environment and safe areas for beginners and children, Font Romeu also offers enjoyable and scenic cruising blue and red runs with a few steeper blacks.
The snow record at Font Romeu is almost guaranteed which is part in thanks to its good altitude and excellent snow making facilities. Font Romeu has the most snow cannons of any French resort. The well-groomed pistes are served by a modern and efficient lift system and despite what looks on paper to be a relatively compact size, the resort offers a good range of runs between the two areas.
Cross country skiing
Font Romeu has the best cross country ski offering within the Pyrenees and has therefore been awarded the “Nordique france” label. Skiing in Font Romeu is particularly good for intermediate and beginner skiers. Many of the runs are fairly short and not too challenging. The resort has signed up to the Les Neiges Catalanes Pass, which grants access to skiing in 8 neighbouring ski resorts (see Lift Pass tab for more details).
Pyrénées 2000 (1,950m-2,213m) offers 58km of ski slopes, 111km of cross-country runs, 500 snow cannons, 1 sledge run, 2 free ski lifts for beginners, 1 boarder cross and 1 slalom.
The southern part of the ski area has very much a fun focus. Fun filled themed ski runs lead to sun drenched outdoor terraces with sun loungers whilst children’s play areas are filled with small igloos and little chalets. The ski area feels like a relaxed snowy beach with all the sunshine and fun on offer. This must be the nearby Spanish influence.
The ski area is split into three distinct sectors – La Gallinera, La Calme and Pyrénées 2000.
La Gallinera sector is accessed from the cable car that leaves from font Romeu. Here you will find the enclosed beginner’s area with its sledging run, the ski school and crèche. Also a short drive away (but local shuttle bus that runs every 15 minutes) is the Plateau Des Airelles parking area with its restaurant and chair lift access to the main ski area. Gallinera peak (2,127m) is easily accessed by the Airelles chairlift.
La Calme is the sector is named after Roc de la calme, the 2,213 peak that is the highest point in the ski resort. It is here that you will find the more difficult runs, the reds and blacks in the ski area. The southerly side of the La Calme area is open whilst the north facing side is gladed.
A dedicated beginner’s area is situated at the top of the “Airelles” Cable car in the “La Gallinera” sector. The beginner’s area is called the “Espace Ludique” (fun area) and it is situated on gentle south facing slopes full of sunshine.
Adults and children alike will appreciate the calm secure beginner area with its themed runs and the amazing panoramas from this side of the mountain.
The beginner’s area is equipped with a baby drag lift and a magic carpet which are both free of charge – and the free ticket for these is available at the ticket office. The Isard and Tremplin drag lifts are payable and included on the local ski pass. There is also a free sledging run within the beginner’s area. Within this area there are six monitored green slopes on which to practise your skiing or snowboarding.
Once you’ve got to grips with your technique and mastered the beginner’s area and you feel ready to take on your first green piste, the best option is to take the Airelles chair lift to the top of the Poule au Pot green run. This run is named after a small chalet restaurant that used to be located on this run – it sold excellent chicken soup – it was so good that the resort decided to name this run after its delectable dish.
The amazingly panoramic green run from the top of the Roc du Calme follows the ridge and leads down to Gallinera (2,127m). It takes in amazing views of the Catalan Pyrenees and all the way to Spain.
The Gallinera area also has a couple of good blue runs through the trees. Try Belvedere haut, Sapinettes, Grand tetras haut, all which lead over to the Pyrenees 2000 ski area and the Col del Pam. From here there are two blue runs in succession that take you through the woods and into Pyrenees 2000. These are the Primevere and Colchiques runs.
When you are ready to face the next challenge of your first blue run, the best place to head is the La Calme sud sector which has some sunny blues.
The high speed Roc chairlift will ensure that you get the maximum amount of time to practice your technique on the long and lazy pistes of Bellevue or the Genet which follow the sunny open slopes down to the bottom for the Roc chairlift.
There are a good proportion of red-graded runs in la Calme Nord, providing an attainable, confidence-building upgrade path for those who are ready to graduate from the blues.
Try the short but sweet red descents with their stunning vistas from the Roc de la Calme summit, (2,213m). These include the sunny runs of Combe du roc, stade de slalomand combe du stade on the open south facing side of the Roc Mountain.
On the northerly side try the panoramic Pradeilles run which has amazing views of the Carlit mountain range and the natural gem of the area, the Bouillouses Lake. More advanced intermediate skiers can really enjoy the two sides of the La Calme area to enjoy the scenic runs and take advantage of the safe areas between them to perfect their powder technique.
Font Romeu offers a couple of choice black runs for experts and these are the Paul Ribell/CNN on the northerly side of the Roc de la Calme.
La Gallinera has the more difficult black runs leaving from the summit. Try Rhodos, Myrtilles and then the Record run which is in the “Stade de Competition”. This was the run used in the European Downhill ski cup in 2012.
For those that like to experiment with the off piste, the La Calme Nord is the best place to go in Font Romeu ski area. In between the red and black pistes in the forest you can enjoy fresh powder after a dump of snow.
Slalom
Font Romeu features both a Stade de Slalom and a Stade de Competition – located on the north side of the Gallinera sector. The Stade de Slalom is named after Christiane Bonnis, a ski champion who died in a biking accident.
The snow park – located in the La Calme sector of the ski area has a good reputation. It is great for skiers and boarders alike. The secured park features numerous jumps, jibs and rails and a box slope. There are also two big air slopes and a boarder cross area. The park also has a beginners’ area with easier jumps and rails. The park sound system ensures that you remain entertained as you practice your 180s and 360s. The “Live park” concept allows you to access the park and using a sticker with an electronic chip inside it, you can record your exploits and best performances from the day.
The daily cost for the Snow park is 24€.
Font Romeu has the best cross country ski offering within the Pyrenees and has therefore been awarded the “Nordique france” label. This means that it has passed rigid tests to ensure that it offers services for exploring natural areas (cross country skiing and other activities such as Snow shoeing) whilst protecting the local environment.
There are 111km of marked and prepared cross country ski pistes located between the “la Calme Plateau” and the Estanyols forest. In the “La Calme” sud (south) area there are artificial snow making facilities which means better snow conditions for cross country skiers too and guaranteed access to higher altitude pistes. The Martin Fourcade run (named after the local biathlon champion) is the starting point of theses trails at the bottom of the Du Roc chairlift. It is also here that you will find the cross country beginner’s area.
There are 22 circuits in total: 7 Green, 10 Blue and 5 Red.
