Above the elegant spa town of Cauterets lies the “Cirque du Lys” ski area, a natural snow bowl extending from 1350 to 2450 metres with 40km of runs and an Oakley Freestyle Snow Park. The resort’s altitude and exposition make it the most snow assured and latest closing resort in the Pyrenees. Furthermore, on 7th Feb. 2013 it was the resort with the most snow in the world!
Cauterets, a village with a very original architecture is situated at the end of the Cauterets valley in the “Vallee des Gaves” (Valley of Rivers) area of the Hautes Pyrenees. Located in the heart of region and just 30km from the famous pilgrimage site of Lourdes, it is the gateway to the Pyrenees National Park.
Surrounded by plentiful pine forests and icy streams that erupt from hot granite springs (55°C to be exact), it has been a famous spa town since the sixteenth century when Marguerite de Navarre, sister of Francis I, came with her court to take the waters. The arrival of a paved road in 1766 beckoned in the “Golden Age” of Cauterets, and the arrival of famous figures such as Chateaubriand, George Sand, Flaubert and Victor Hugo. The array of A-listers soon transformed the landscape and small village into a “Belle Epoque” spa town with classical promenades, viewing points, open areas and stunning neo-classical architecture. It is said that the name Cauterets is made from two words meaning “Hot” and “cold” in the old dialect. One of the traditions in Cauterets is not only to “Take the waters” but also to try the fruit flavoured boiled sweets for which the town is famous. The “Berlingots” were given to children who had “taken the waters” to take away the unsavoury aftertaste of the mineral rich water.
It was in the 60’s Cauterets became a ski resort and it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. With two ski areas it caters for both downhill and cross country/Nordic skiing. The “Cirque du Lys” ski area caters to downhill winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding and is located above the town of Cauterets and accessed by a 12 minute Gondola ride. This natural snow bowl extends from 1350 metres to 3250 metres. There are 35km of lift served runs as well as a snow park and 11 strategically placed snow canons to ensure top snow coverage at all times. The other Nordic ski area called “Pont d’Espagne” (Spanish Bridge) is located in the Pyrenees National Park and takes its name from the trade route between the two countries that used to pass via this area.
For beginner alpine skiers and especially suited to families, the small beginners area in the “Cirque du Lys” with its 4 slopes (2 green, 1 blue, 1 red) and ski tow is perfect and offers the luxury of learning in an idyllic and quiet location. There is also a sledging slope nearby. In the Pont d'Espagne walkers and snow shoe fanatics will find 6km of prepared snow trails showcasing various snow shoe circuits.
Cauterets is a member of the “Kids Station” brand which strives to accommodate children as well as possible and to make Cauterets a great resort for families.
The friendly and helpful Cauterets Tourist Office is open every day during the winter season, 08:30 – 19:00. Their comprehensive website is full of useful information, tips and suggestions.

Replacement of a draglift by a 360m long carpet dedicated to the beginners. This new lift is the 3rd carpet in the childrens area and offers greater convenience and facilities for learning to ski. This carpet will be the longest in Europe!
The new carpet is accompanied by an enlargement of the green slope, “Plateau,” and reshape of the access to the beginners slopes.
The pretty little town of Cauterets has two ski areas that are both located in the Pyrenees National Park; the Cirque du Lys ski area for alpine skiing and Pont d'Espagne for nordic skiing.
The alpine ski area of “Cirque du Lys” is located at 1730 – 2450 metres and has 21 slopes, 3 Freestyle zones. The ski resort was opened in January 1964. It is a 12 minute ride from Cauterets up the mountain on the “Telecabine du Lys” cable car where all the fun begins in this powder filled natural snow bowl.
The panoramic views from the ski area are 360 degrees and breath taking. They take in a large chunk of the Pyrenees range including Le Vignale, L’Ardiden, Le Pic du Midi and in the distance the Tarbes plain and Le Balaitous peak in Spain. The natural mountain cirque is a perfect location for downhill skiing as the bowl like shape allows for secure downhill runs all leading in to the central hub of the mountain ski centre.
The newly renovated mountain ski centre at the centre of the ski area is where all the runs return to and where all the lifts start from, this means you can never get lost and that it is easy to meet up with friends and family for that lunchtime stop of quick refreshment break. It is also here that you will find all the ski resorts amenities such as ski lockers (payable), Ski schools, 2 restaurants, a children’s day nursery, daytime babysitting services, toilets, a picnic area and the amazing outdoor terrace with seating and deckchairs (during sunny days).
One of the great pluses about Cauterets ski centre is the sun terrace outside which becomes an amazing sun-bathing hub. This sociable area has a veritable buzz to it on a summer day when the sun is shining and the sun loungers are out welcoming you to sit back and “bronze” yourself. It is a real suntrap and many folk simply “while away” the hours here people watching and enjoying a Vitamin D recharge.
Resort shuttle bus in Cauterets
The “City Cab” shuttle is a free service and makes getting around the village so easy. The shuttles service two loops called “Rive Droite” (Right bank) known as Ligne 1 and “Rive Gauche” (Left Bank) known as Ligne 2. The buses drop off in major locations as well as the cable car station and the thermal baths. There are bus stops located around town and the bus runs all winter long from 20 December to 25 April.

Pont d’Espagne
“Pont d’Espagne” also known as “little Canada of the Pyrenees” is a prestigious site in the very heart of the Pyrenees National Park. Not only is it one of the “Grand sites” of the Midi Pyrenees region but it is also an area of great natural beauty.
During the winter months you will be mesmerised by its fairy-tale state – frozen waterfalls and snowy paths leading amongst heavy pine forests. With its sublime panoramas and gushing waterfalls it is an exceptional setting for cross country skiing and snowshoe walking. The “Lac de Gaube” lake is situated high in the Pont d’Espagne (1725m).and is a 15 minute walk/ski from “Belvedere” viewing point at the top of the “Gaube” chairlift.
Le Pont d’Espagne takes its name not only from the pretty stone bridge that crosses the magnificent central waterfall but also from history. This bridge and its surrounding area is so called because if its ancient links with Spain. For hundreds of years this was a crossing point between the two countries and an important trade route. Traders would make the long and arduous journey across the Pyrenees with their wares strapped to a donkeys or most often than not on their own backs.
There are 6km of ski pistes here: 1 black run, 1 red run, 1 blue run and 2 green runs served by one cable car and two drag lifts. There is also a 6km cross country ski circuit that is maintained daily and can be used by snow shoe enthusiasts. Many people also come to Pont d’Espagne for sledging.

Cauterets has plenty to offer novices and intermediate skiers who appreciate a stunning location as well as an even mix of enjoyable green runs and scenic cruising blue and red runs. There are also a couple of steeper blacks for those looking for an adrenaline shot.
Most of the pistes are north facing which means that the snow on the slopes stays fresh for longer. Furthermore the resort’s altitude and exposition make it the most snow assured and latest closing resort in the Pyrenees. Furthermore, on 7th Feb. 2013 it was the resort with the most snow in the world! Le Cirque du Lys is the main downhill skiing and snowboarding area and provides a great range of skiing for all abilities. The magnificent setting encourages stops to one of the altitude chalet restaurants in between cruising the pleasant and well maintained green, blue and red runs. For the more demanding skiers and boarders a selection of black pistes and reasonable powder off-piste will surely match their search for sensation. There is also a second independent area named “Pont d'Espagne” (7km away and reached by local shuttle bus or with a car) principally made for Nordic skiing but that also offers half a dozen very contemplative circuits to the downhill enthusiasts and beginners or families. Cauterets was awarded "Best Snow Dump of the Season 08/09" by the Ski Club of Great Britain for having 160cm of snow fall in just 36 hours!
However in the Cirque du Lys, the main and larger ski area, there is a dedicated beginner’s area is situated at the base of the snow bowl just in front of the main mountain building with all its services and facilities. This makes it a perfect location for beginner skiers. It is a safe and secure sector served by two magic carpets and two drag lifts. This sector is free of charge.
Once you’ve got to grips with your technique and mastered the beginner’s area and you feel ready to take on your first green run, the best option is to take the green run from the top of the “Source” or “Plateau” drag lifts.
When you are ready to face the next challenge of your first blue run, the best place to head is the “Crêtes” run, a new and easy blue run developed last winter. Its starting point is at the top of the “Grand Barbat” lift and it is sufficiently long for you to practise your turns! It is an ideal starting point and the track that takes you along the ridge allows you to take a relaxing tour of the ski area whilst enjoying the great views of the mountain peaks. The most famous of these being the Vignemale, Ardiden, Neouvielle and the Pic du Midi and in the far distance the plains of Tarbes. The run then returns you to the bottom of the slopes and the safety of the beginner’s area. The total descent takes in a vertical drop of just 600 metres meaning a gentle ski all the way.
There are some great long winding blues from the top of the resort all the way down the bottom - to the ski front.
The most panoramic is probably the “Crêtes” run, a new and easy blue run developed last winter. It is an easy run down taking you along the outer ridge of the resort but it does promise great views of the mountain peaks. The most famous of these being the Vignemale, Ardiden, Neouvielle and the Pic du Midi and in the far distance the plains of Tarbes. The run then returns you to the bottom of the slopes.
Otherwise you can peel off from the “Crêtes” run and take the “Gentiane” runs through the middle of the ski area – there are plenty of snow cannons located in this area so if it coming to the end of the season and snow cover is poor this is the best place to head. This is sure to be an excellent leg burner before lunch time if you want to make space for that “Tartiflette”.
Red runs are what Cauterets had most of (by a whisker), so you will have plenty to go at here. There are a couple of great reds accessible from the top of the “Touyarolles” lift - the second highest summit in the resort and one the resort’s most eastern side. “Edelweiss” and “Mahl Blanc” peel off to the left of the lift line and whilst “Edelweiss” goes wide and takes in the outermost part of the ski area, “Mahl Blanc” has a steeper more direct incline heading straight to the base of the lift. From the bottom of the lift the “Asphodele” run a decent and long leg burner taking you over the wide open run with nothing else around you. It brings you back to the bottom of the “Crete” lift at 1,730m.
More advanced intermediate skiers can really enjoy the scenic runs and take advantage of the safe areas between them to perfect their powder technique.
Cauterets offers a couple of cheeky black runs that drop down from the “Crêtes” run into the powder bowl. Both blacks, “Combe du Barbat” and “Orchis” have a decent incline and after a fresh dump of snow they provide excellent off-piste skiing in a safe snow bowl.
For those that like to experiment with the off piste, the Cauterets ski area is actually quite interesting as it has some of the best snowfall in the world. Cauterets was awarded "Best Snow Dump of the Season 08/09" by the Ski Club of Great Britain for having 160cm of snow fall in just 36 hours! There is plenty of fresh powder to go at if you head to the top of the resort and the ski bowl that is “Le Cirque du Lys”. From the top of the “Grand Barbat” lift the off-piste below the “Crêtes” run, inside the bowl is great whilst rom the top of the “Touyarolles” lift the off-piste on both sides of the “Edelweiss” run and the “Asphodele” run seems to go on forever. Le Pont d’Espagne (literally translated as “the Spanish Bridge”) is a Nordic playground located 7km from the town centre in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park. The “Puntas” cable car here takes you to the top of the natural ski area where Cross country, Snow shoe and alpine downhill skiing awaits. There is an extensive network of cross country tracks prepared on a regular basis whish take in the breath-taking scenery of this section of the National Park. The 36km of cross country of the 5 trails lead past a stunning waterfall and gorges rushing with fresh mountain waters. The wildlife that inhabits the area is ever present and spectacular so keep your eyes peeled for isards, also known as chamois, roaming the hillsides. The Oakley Freestyle Park is a world class snow park and the only French freestyle park sponsored by a worldwide American brand such as Oakley. Furthermore the Oakley snowboard team make visits to the park for practise and fun and last year they did a photo shoot here. It is widely regarded as one of the best in the Pyrenees and is popular site enjoyed by boarders and skiers alike. As well as the mandatory jumps, jibs and rails, there is the wall ride, pipe lines and a Border cross with 20 modules – enough to keep the keenest of boarders satisfied for days! There is always a great atmosphere and the local bar/snack bar serves up snacks and refreshments. On Saturdays the place comes alive with an ice-bar and a DJ playing major tunes. Off piste
